Mentor Curriculum: Unit 4 (Junior)

Meeting Agenda Templates

Use these pre-made sample agendas to run your sessions with your students. These templates were developed to reflect the experience and division of student teams. Mentors are encouraged to adjust the agendas to meet the needs of your team. The agenda is designed to accommodate different meeting formats.

Choose the option that best fits your team.

⭐️ 2-Hour Meeting
Complete the full agenda during one 2-hour meeting.

🌱 Two 1-Hour Meetings
Divide the agenda between two 1-hour meetings.

⚡️ 1-Hour Meeting Each Week
Use the 1-Hour Meeting markers to identify the activities to complete during each weekly 1-hour meeting. Complete the remaining activities between meetings as homework.

BUILD YOUR AGENDA

Select one of the agenda templates and fill it in with the week’s activities to organize what your team will cover in your meeting for the week.

Any remaining activities should be completed by the team outside of the meeting or in future meetings.

OUTLINE OF ACTIVITIES FOR THE UNIT

Unit 4 has 5 activities, not all of them need to be done in your session together. Choose what you would like to accomplish together in a 1 -2 hour meeting. The team can work on the remaining activities separately. To learn how these activities help your team, review the Goals of the Activities.

Activity

💡Minimum Viable Product Activity: Plan your MVP worksheet, list features in order of priority. Use this as the team’s ordered coding tasklist.

📱Different Components Activity: Learn a new Component: Have students choose at least one component from the list of media, social, connectivity, sensor, storage components to include in your app, find documentation and/or a tutorial for the component. Get students to code a practice app or start building their app!

📱Debugging Activity 1: Fix the bug. Preview the app and code to fix the conditional statements.

📱Debugging Activity 2: Add a comment to code. This is not required, but commenting code is a helpful way to document what certain code blocks do.

📈Datasets Activity: Plan your Dataset worksheet, to start thinking about the data you need for your project.

Goals of the activities:

💡(Ideation) Minimum Viable Product (30 min)

In this activity, students will:

  • Create an MVP which is an app or AI project that has just enough features to get the job done you can test with users so that improvements can be made later.
  • Include realistic goals and prioritize the features they want to add.

❗️Coding Tip❗️

Make coding feel manageable!

Often girls get excited with their app or AI project idea and it can be a bit overwhelming when it comes to coding it. Encourage the team to choose manageable goals, and to prioritize them. Girls get discouraged when they actually start coding their app and don’t know where to start. By breaking it down into small achievable chunks, they should be able to make progress

How?

  • The MVP worksheet (this week) can help teams to list the features they want to add.
  • Choose one feature. Add it in your chosen platform and then test it to make sure it works.
  • Use checkpoint (App Inventor) so you preserve the working version of the app or versioning (make a copy (Thunkable – although you are limited to 10 projects).
    • If you are unable to create it in one platform, try it in the other to see which works better for your team
  • Add the next feature. And repeat.

📱(Coding) Different Components (60 min)

In this activity, students will:

  • Review different components available to use in App Inventor and Thunkable.
  • Find one component that can help their app
  • Research a tutorial and code at least one component of their app

📱(Coding) Debugging (30 min)

In this activity, students will:

  • Learn some techniques to find the errors in your code and to fix them, specifically in App Inventor and Thunkable (many programming languages have built-in debuggers to help programmers find and fix errors, App Inventor and Thunkable do not).
  • Learn how to make a manageable and better understanding of your code by adding comments.

📈(AI) Datasets (45 min)

In this activity, students will:

  • Plan their dataset, the input examples used to train a machine learning model.
