Mentor Curriculum: Unit 8 (Junior)

Meeting Agenda Templates

Use these pre-made sample agendas to run your sessions with your students. These templates were developed to reflect the experience and division of student teams. Mentors are encouraged to adjust the agendas to meet the needs of your team. The agenda is designed to accommodate different meeting formats.

Choose the option that best fits your team.

⭐️ 2-Hour Meeting
Complete the full agenda during one 2-hour meeting.

🌱 Two 1-Hour Meetings
Divide the agenda between two 1-hour meetings.

⚡️ 1-Hour Meeting Each Week
Use the 1-Hour Meeting markers to identify the activities to complete during each weekly 1-hour meeting. Complete the remaining activities between meetings as homework.

BUILD YOUR AGENDA

Select one of the agenda templates and fill it in with the week’s activities to organize what your team will cover in your meeting for the week.

Any remaining activities should be completed by the team outside of the meeting or in future meetings.

Teams may pull out of Technovation Girls around this time.

  • Be aware of and sensitive to their vulnerabilities, and try to support and encourage them!
  • Breaking the remaining tasks into smaller manageable subtasks is helpful.
  • Revisit the MVP and remind the team they only need to show the key features. Any additional features can become future features in their pitch video.

OUTLINE OF ACTIVITIES FOR THE UNIT

Unit 8 has 6 activities, not all of them need to be done in your session together. Choose what you would like to accomplish together in a 1 -2 hour meeting. The team can work on the remaining activities separately. To learn how these activities help your team, review the Goals of the Activities.

Note: We strongly recommend using App Inventor over Thunkable, as Thunkable may have additional restrictions for free accounts.

Activity

📣Outline Pitch and Technical Video Activity 1: Outline your Pitch Video worksheet helps to address each part of the judging rubric by answering each question. Make use of materials from past weeks that you can use in the video.

📣Outline Pitch and Technical Video Activity 2: Outline your Technical Video worksheet helps to address each part of the judging rubric by answering each question. Make use of materials from past weeks that you can use in the video.

📣Outline Pitch and Technical Video Activity 3: Storyboard your videos using drawings for each part of the video (stick figures work!), give each picture a description, and use multiple sheets if needed.

📣Outline Pitch and Technical Video Activity 4: using the outline and storyboard from the above activities, prepare a script for the pitch video and one for the technical video.

📑User Adoption Plan Activity (Junior teams only): User Adoption Plan template to answer all the questions needed as part of the user adoption plan. Take the completed answers into a finished document for submission – should be 1-2 pages in length.

📑Business Plan Activity (Senior teams only): Business Plan Checklist to make sure their business plan has the necessary parts. Review it as a team and then split up the sections among team members.

📱API Activity: Fruit Nutrition API

  • open the Fruit Information project (App Inventor | Thunkable)
    • For Thunkable only, “Click to remix”
  • Run the app to see how it works
  • Right now, the app displays only Calorie information. Add a second label below CalorieLabel to display one of the other nutritional values returned.
  • Solutions in the Week 8 curriculum

Goals of the activities:

📣(Pitch) Outline your Pitch and Technical Videos (90 min)

In these activities students will:

  • Answer key questions that need to be included in the pitch based on the judging rubric. For their 4 minute pitch video and 2 minute technical video.
  • Think about how to show their product in action, explain how it works, and demonstrate some of the technical knowledge you have gained by explaining some of the code or training behind the product in the technical video.
  • Document what their pitch and technical videos will include using an outline and storyboard to build their script.

❗️PITCH TIP❗️

Common challenges for the pitch video:

  • Teams either put in too much detail about their app (and a very long pitch as a result), or the teams go into detail about their problem and need to talk more about their app design specifically.
  • Some of the team members are shy and don’t want to talk or talk very quietly. Remind them about the importance of their voice!
  • Talk about competitors – teams often forget to say how their product compares to others and is better than the competition.

Additional Resources:

  • The Pitch
  • You, their mentor! When the team has finished their planning materials, it is important for you to review and provide feedback.
  • Some additional activities to build out their pitch:
    • Use the 3-level pitch: a 5-second pitch (concise, clear sentences about your idea) , a 30-second pitch (add how you plan to execute the idea), and then create a 4 minute pitch.
    • Build a message map: A) Create a twitter friendly headline B) Give three key benefits of the headline C) Give stories, statistics, and examples of the benefits.
    • Reuse the problem statement. The problem statement and solution can now be made more concise and used in a pitch. Statistics should be included.

📑(Entrepreneurship) User Adoption Plan (45 min+) Junior Division only

In this activity students will:

  • Explain their target market, how they engaged the target market to learn about and use their product, and future plans to get more people to use their product.
  • Explain how feedback from users changed plans for the product. If they can show that they have tested their product with actual users, that is a real bonus.

📑(Entrepreneurship) Business Plan (45 min) Senior Division Only

In this activity students will:

  • Write their 5-10 page business plan that includes important information about your company, its goals, and how you plan to achieve those goals.

📱(Coding) APIs (30 min)

In this activity students will:

  • Learn about using Application Programming Interfaces or APIs to allow you to communicate with external websites and servers.
