Mentor Curriculum: Unit 7 (Junior)

Meeting Agenda Templates

Use these pre-made sample agendas to run your sessions with your students. These templates were developed to reflect the experience and division of student teams. Mentors are encouraged to adjust the agendas to meet the needs of your team. The agenda is designed to accommodate different meeting formats.

Choose the option that best fits your team.

āļø 2-Hour Meeting
Complete the full agenda during one 2-hour meeting.

🌱 Two 1-Hour Meetings
Divide the agenda between two 1-hour meetings.Ā

āš”ļø 1-Hour Meeting Each Week
Use the 1-Hour Meeting markers to identify the activities to complete during each weekly 1-hour meeting. Complete the remaining activities between meetings as homework.

BUILD YOUR AGENDA

Select one of the agenda templates and fill it in with the week’s activities to organize what your team will cover in your meeting for the week.Ā

Any remaining activities should be completed by the team outside of the meeting or in future meetings.

OUTLINE OF ACTIVITIES FOR THE UNIT

Unit 7 has 3 activities, not all of them need to be done in your session together. Choose what you would like to accomplish together in a 1 -2 hour meeting. The team can work on the remaining activities separately. To learn how these activities help your team, review the Goals of the Activities.

Note: We strongly recommend using App Inventor over Thunkable, as Thunkable may have additional restrictions for free accounts.

Can be done during the meeting

Can be done after the meeting

Activity

šŸ“‘Operating Costs Activity: Business Finances worksheet review the revenue model from Week 6 to determine costs each year, fill in the Operating Costs section, and calculate profit.

Skip if you are not making a mobile app

šŸ“±Storing Data Activity: Store Game Scores (App Inventor Starter Project | Thunkable Starter Project)

Skip if you are making a mobile app

šŸ“ˆSoftware options for your AI Model: Integrate your AI model: have the team select a platform they would like to use to add their training model to a project, create a new project and add their model, begin adding components and code to take action based on their model’s predictions.

Goals of the activities:

šŸ“‘(Entrepreneurship) Ā Operating Costs (30 min)

In this activity students will:Ā

  • Determine operating costs of running their businessĀ
  • Calculate profit, which is the amount of money it takes to run the business.Ā

Note: This lesson is helpful for the business plan; again, Senior teams need to do this lesson, but Junior teams may skip it.

Ā

šŸ“±(Coding) Storing Data (60 min)

In this activity students will:Ā

  • Learn about how variables allow you to store information within an app.Ā
  • Learn that local storage is a way to store information on a mobile device, and cloud storage allows you to store/share information between users of an app.
  • Update a quick quiz game to store high scores.

Ā

šŸ“ˆ(AI) Software Options for your AI Model (60+ min)

In this activity students will:Ā

  • Learn about 4 platforms that teams can integrate their AI model into their project (it helps to stick to the same platform to build the model then use it in the accompanying software
    • stretch3 (Scratch variant)
    • Machine Learning for Kids
    • MIT App Inventor
    • Thunkable

Additional Resources: Some examples of using external devices, like micro:bit and Corali, are shown.

  • Marshmallow Sorter uses Coral microcontroller and Teachable Machine to sort cereal.
  • Mask Detector uses micro:bit and stretch3 to open a door if the user is correctly wearing a mask.

ā—ļøMENTOR TIPā—ļø

Keep your team motivated! Teams might start to get frustrated at this point in the program and it might be hard for them to persevere if they start hitting roadblocks.Ā

How?

  • Celebrate accomplishments along the way. Hopefully the team has broken down the very large project into manageable tasks. Have fun! Encourage girls by staying upbeat and recognizing the process as the point.
  • Stick to small manageable tasks. It’s easier to face a small task, tackle it, and then check it off as ā€œdoneā€. Progress can be tracked, and it’s easier to see the endpoint.Ā
  • Prioritize tasks. If there are some features of the project the team does not get to, that is ok. Complete what is feasible, and concentrate on the deliverables for the Challenge.
