Teen sisters from Redwood City win international mobile app competition

SAN FRANCISCO — Beating out hundreds of teams from around the world, two teenage girls from Redwood City have won $10,000 in seed funding to develop their mobile app.

Sisters Allison and Jennifer John, 13 and 15, walked away Thursday with the grand prize after pitching their app, Loc8Don8, during the Technovation World Pitch Summit at the University of San Francisco. The girls-only contest, which drew 800 entrants, challenged teams to build a mobile app that solved a problem in their community. Loc8Don8 tackles two issues — wealth disparity and waste — by making it easier for users to find places to donate their unwanted household items.
