WHAT IS SDG 13 ALL ABOUT?

MAIN ISSUES

WHERE DO WE START?

Are you thinking,
turning off lights
is the best solution?

Did you know there
are many more powerful
things you could work on?

START: UN SDG 13 TARGETS

Click on each tab on the left to read each target.

Some of these targets are good ones to work on. Others may not apply.

13.1 Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries.

This target relates to how people and communities can adapt to climate-related hazards like heat waves and droughts as well as more prevalent natural disasters like floods and wildfires. This is a good target to work on, as it affects many communities.

13.2 Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning

This target relates to how governments can work on climate change. Advocating to politicians and government agencies to take climate action can be a way to address this target.

13.3 Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.

This target is all about education and raising awareness of people to climate change and its effects. Definitely a good target to work on!

13.A Implement the commitment undertaken by developed-country parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to a goal of mobilizing jointly $100 billion annually by 2020 from all sources to address the needs of developing countries in the context of meaningful mitigation actions and transparency on implementation and fully operationalize the Green Climate Fund through its capitalization as soon as possible.

This target is all about spending committed funds to help developing nations combat climate change. While a great target, it is unlikely to be one you can work on for your Technovation project.

13.B Promote mechanisms for raising capacity for effective climate change-related planning and management in least developed countries and small island developing States, including focusing on women, youth and local and marginalized communities.

Poorer countries are bearing the brunt of climate change’s effects. You might consider focusing on women, youth and local and marginalized communities as a way to work on climate action.

NEXT STEPS

  1. Look at the SDG 13 targets.
  2. Choose some of interest.
  3. Start generating thoughts and ideas around each topic.
  4. Relate to issues in your own community.
  5. Connect ideas that relate.

Here is a brainstorming example.

Then

  1. From your map, select one or two particular areas to focus on.
  2. Dig deeper with some research into those particular ideas and topics.

For example, you might choose Take Action and Rising temperatures to focus on.

ACTIVITY: BRAINSTORMING

Estimated time: 20 minutes

Make a mind map to generate ideas around the SDG 13 targets

On paper, or digitally with a tool like Miro or Padlet:
  • Write down issues, ideas, organizations, people in boxes or bubbles
  • Connect related boxes
  • Review the ideas and themes.
  • Select one or two main themes/issues that interest you and that you have seen in your community.
  • Research those topics further and start to brainstorm solutions.
